Thank you to everyone who came out to support CLADC and to hear Senators Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Tim Scott (R-SC) speak about the need for reform in our criminal justice system.
Our ministry had several takeaways. First, it was inspirational that more than 300 people cared enough about the issues of incarceration to attend our event, co-hosted with Justice Fellowship. Second, we were challenged by the gravity of the situation; according to Senator Booker, between 75 and 100 million Americans have been arrested, and we heard from Saul Green just how devastating those arrests can be. Finally, and most importantly, the event reminded us of the importance of restorative values and the need for Christian leadership in this area.
We wish the event had allowed for more time to discuss calls to action. We hope, however, that everyone will seek out their own ways to effect change in this area. We all can. If you’re an employer, I hope you’ll have more compassion in hiring. As a church member, more empathy in welcoming formerly incarcerated individuals to your church. As a voter, more focus on a politician’s positions in this area. The list goes on.
One easy way to act is to support ministries working with currently and formerly incarcerated individuals. Our ministry is always in need of more attorney volunteers and law students. And, if you’re not a lawyer, you can always support our work by donating through this site or volunteering in other ways.
Again, on behalf of our ministry, thank you so much for attending this event. We hope it will be the first discussion of many on topics affecting the clients we serve. We look forward to seeing you in the future!
